His operas and music to pieces were visibly weaker than his symphonic compositions and impromptus, that’s why the latter are better remembered today. It would be a wrong assertion that Schubert prospered as a composer especially when we take into account his earnings – he couldn’t even get married – his meager income of a teacher was not sufficient to provide a family which was against the law existing at the time. At this very time he also composed two symphonies – the genre where Schubert acted as successor of Beethoven. Within just one year of 1815 he composed about 100 songs, a record beaten in 1840 by Schumann, who, depressed by the circumstances preventing him from getting married, exceeded that number by 50. A copious composer, Franz Schubert left a tremendous legacy of works written during his active period of thirteen years.
